THE PRIMERISK APPROACH

Moving Risk Roadmap

A clearer view of the risks behind every move.

Every move has more than one exposure.

We start with your operations and the questions that matter to your business.

  • Local or interstate operations and the territory you serve.
  • Owned, rented and leased trucks, drivers and vehicle use.
  • Customers’ goods during loading, transit, unloading and storage.
  • Employee responsibilities, subcontracted moves and customer agreements.

What to have ready.

A few details help make your first conversation more useful.

  • Your vehicle schedule and driver information.
  • The types of goods you move and any storage operations.
  • Your operating territory, revenue and current insurance.

Questions worth asking.

Are cargo insurance and valuation protection the same thing?

They are different concepts. A mover’s obligations to customers and the protection provided by an insurance policy should be reviewed together. Ask how valuation options, policy limits and exclusions interact.

Will transit coverage also cover goods in storage?

Do not assume it does. Explain whether you use temporary storage, warehouses or overnight truck storage and ask your agent to review the applicable terms.

Coverage availability and requirements depend on your operations, location and policy terms. An agent can help review your situation.

COVERAGE QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Moving Company Insurance: Trucks, Crews & Cargo

Moving company insurance needs to address vehicles, employees, customer property, and any storage operations. Cargo coverage and the valuation obligations in your customer agreement are different concepts. Review both, including limits, exclusions, and when responsibility begins and ends.

What to discuss before comparing policies
Trucks and driversProvide vehicle schedules, driver details, operating radius, and owned, rented, or leased truck arrangements.
Customer goodsDiscuss loading, transit, unloading, high-value items, packing, deductibles, and limits per vehicle or shipment.
Storage and premisesExplain warehouses, temporary storage, and goods left in trucks overnight. Do not assume a transit policy covers every storage situation.

What affects the cost?

Fleet size, vehicles, drivers, operating territory, revenue, cargo values, claims history, and storage arrangements help determine pricing. Local residential moves, office relocations, and interstate household goods operations may need different underwriting information.

What changes when we perform interstate household goods moves?

Interstate operations can introduce federal registration, insurance filing, and consumer-protection obligations. FMCSA distinguishes customer valuation options from separate insurance. Confirm requirements for your exact authority and operations; a filing minimum is not a full assessment of your business’s coverage needs.

ILLUSTRATIVE SCENARIO

Where policy details matter.

A loaded truck is parked overnight before delivery. Theft raises questions about unattended-vehicle conditions, security requirements, the cargo limit, and the customer agreement. Discuss the actual parking and storage routine before comparing policies.

Educational reference: FMCSA: valuation and insurance. Examples do not establish coverage for a particular claim.
